What is the Washington Pastoral Counseling Service?

The Washington Pastoral Counseling Service is a non-profit, interfaith organization who services are available to all people. WPCS began in 1961 as a ministry of Foundry United Methodist Church. In 1982 it expanded into an interfaith pastoral counseling service serving the Metro DC and Maryland area.


What do you do?

WPCS offers professional counseling to individuals experiencing difficulties in coping with the stresses and crises of daily life. Such counseling may be relatively brief or long-term.


How is pastoral counseling different from other forms of counseling?

Pastoral Counselors are professional counselors sensitive not only to relational and emotional issues, but to spiritual and ethical issues as well. Whether WPCS's counselors are clergy or laity, all are licensed independent clinicians who bring both psychological and spiritual frames of reference to their work, ensuring a wider path to wholeness and health.


What are some common problems you can help me with?

WPCS offers professional counseling to individuals, couples and families experiencing difficulties in coping with the stresses and crises of daily life. These difficulties may include, but are not limited to:

  • self-esteem

  • marriage preparation

  • separation, divorce, remarriage

  • depression and anxiety

  • interpersonal relationships

  • grief and loss

  • alcohol and other addictions

  • faith concerns

  • abuse recovery

What are the qualifications of your pastoral counselors?

Our counselors' qualifications include state licensing and certification, as well as memberships in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, National Association of Social Workers.

How do you make pastoral counseling affordable?

We offer counseling on a fee for service basis. A sliding scale is available for those in need. Individuals may be eligible for health insurance reimbursement. No one is refused service because of the inability to pay the scheduled fee.
